๐Ÿ’ฌ About Rock Eagle Effigy Mound

Rock Eagle is one of the most remarkable archaeological treasures in the entire Eastern United States. Located on the grounds of the University of Georgia's Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Putnam County, this ancient effigy mound was constructed from thousands of milky quartz rocks arranged in the shape of a large bird with outstretched wings โ€” measuring approximately 102 feet from head to tail and 120 feet from wingtip to wingtip. Archaeologists believe the mound was built between 1,000 and 3,000 years ago by the Woodland peoples who inhabited this region long before European contact. Visitors can view the mound from an observation tower and walk the surrounding grounds. The adjacent 4-H Center hosts camps, conferences, and outdoor education programs throughout the year.
