Lake Oconee is the reason so many people who visit Putnam County end up moving here. Created by the Wallace Dam in 1979, this 19,000-acre reservoir on the Oconee River has grown into one of the Southeast's most celebrated lake destinations โ and it's right here in the heart of Lake Country.
The Water
Lake Oconee is renowned for its water quality and clarity, which makes it exceptional for boating, swimming, and fishing. Largemouth bass are the primary draw for anglers, and the lake hosts major bass tournaments throughout the spring and fall. Striped bass, crappie, and catfish round out the angling opportunities. Multiple public boat ramps provide access for day visitors.
Reynolds Lake Oconee
The crown jewel of the Lake Oconee area is Reynolds Lake Oconee, a world-class resort community featuring six championship golf courses designed by legends including Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Bob Cupp, and Rees Jones. The resort also offers spa services, multiple dining venues, tennis, fitness facilities, and some of the most beautiful real estate in Georgia. Day visitors can access some facilities; membership or accommodations booking provides full access.
Getting There
Lake Oconee straddles Putnam, Greene, and Morgan counties. From Eatonton, the lake is just minutes away via US-441 North. The lake's southern shore is the most accessible from Putnam County. Public access points include several county-maintained boat ramps and parks along the shoreline.
Why People Move Here
Lake Oconee has driven a sustained housing boom in Putnam County throughout the 21st century. The combination of lake access, world-class golf, proximity to Atlanta (about 90 minutes) and Athens (about 45 minutes), and a dramatically lower cost of living than either metro area makes Lake Country one of Georgia's most desirable destinations for retirement and relocation.
