Most people who visit Rock Eagle Effigy Mound for the first time say the same thing say the same thing: they had no idea something this extraordinary existed in Georgia. And that's exactly what makes it one of Putnam County's most valuable โ€” and underappreciated โ€” treasures.

What Is Rock Eagle?

Rock Eagle is an ancient effigy mound constructed from thousands of milky quartz rocks arranged in the shape of a large bird with outstretched wings. The mound measures approximately 102 feet from head to tail and 120 feet from wingtip to wingtip โ€” making it one of the largest prehistoric effigy mounds in the Eastern United States. Archaeologists date its construction to somewhere between 1,000 and 3,000 years ago, attributed to the Woodland peoples who inhabited Central Georgia long before European contact.

The View from the Tower

The best way to appreciate the full scale and artistry of Rock Eagle is from the observation tower that overlooks the mound. From above, the bird shape becomes unmistakable โ€” the careful arrangement of thousands of individual stones forming wings, a head, and a tail in unmistakable silhouette. It's one of those rare moments where ancient human intention speaks across millennia.

The 4-H Center

Rock Eagle is located on the grounds of the University of Georgia's Rock Eagle 4-H Center, which hosts camps, conferences, outdoor education programs, and group events throughout the year. The 1,400-acre property includes a lake, hiking trails, and excellent facilities that serve Georgia youth programs and adult groups alike.

Plan Your Visit

Rock Eagle is located at 350 Rock Eagle Road NW in Eatonton โ€” about 7 miles from downtown. The observation tower is accessible during 4-H Center operating hours. Admission is free for mound viewing. The site is peaceful, wooded, and genuinely moving โ€” well worth adding to any Putnam County itinerary.
